VOLUNTEERING AT Whw

Volunteering at Windsor Hill Wood is rewarding and good fun. We have many jobs that need to be done including food preparation, building maintenance, crafts, grounds maintenance on our 10 acre site, chopping firewood, caring for our animals and growing vegetables. Volunteers also collect groceries, deliver rubbish to the tip and help out with fundraising events and Open Days.

There is a regular weekly Volunteers Afternoon from 2-5pm on Wednesdays but some jobs may be required at other times. Our wardens will usually allocate the tasks and make sure that everyone is happy with the job they are given and have the necessary skills, materials and tools to carry it out. We all break for drinks and cake in the middle of the afternoon - a great time to catch up on all the Windsor Hill news.

To help us to know how and when you want to help please complete and submit the volunteers application form below.

Gardening

Volunteer gardening is a great way to help out the community while enjoying the outdoors. Whether you have green fingers or are just starting out, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. From digging mulching, planting and weeding to pruning, mowing, harvesting and composting, there's always something to do in the garden, the greenhouse and the polytunnels here at Windsor Hill Wood.

Animals

Volunteering for animal husbandry is a rewarding way to contribute to animal welfare and learn about animal care. We currently raise, a pig, a goat, ducks and chickens and most of their care is the responsibility of guests and has to be carried out at set times. If you like to get involved in caring for our animals, however, please discuss with the Wardens. Opportunities may be available for working with the animals, and it's a great way to meet like-minded people.

woodland

Volunteering in the woodland helps us to manage our special environment for the benefit of all guests and visitors. There are dying and diseased trees to fell (assisting our qualified forester), new trees to plant, undergrowth to strim and clear,  paths and roads to maintain and fuel for our biomass boiler and woodburning stoves to chop.   Not only will you be helping to preserve our natural resources, but you may also be learning new skills.

cooking

Would you like to turn your garden produce into delicious and nutritious food? With our food processing knowledge, we can help you to transform your donated fresh fruit and vegetables into jams, sauces, pickles, soups and more. Its a great way to help us to keep our costs down and enjoy healthy home-grown food.

Alternatively, if you love cooking, why not volunteer to cook a meal for the Windsor Hill community from time to time?

buildings

Many of our buildings are old and some a little the worse for wear so there's usually a list of tasks for volunteers including, carpentry, decorating, plumbing, electrics,  and general DIY to keep the site operational and safe for the whole community. No one will be asked to do a job they don't feel able to do and all tools, materials and safety gear is provided. You'll leave knowing that you have contributed to the preservation of the buildings at Windsor Hill Wood.

Crafts

Craft volunteering is a great way to share your creative skills with others who are keen to learn. Whether you're into knitting, painting, woodcarving, jewellery making, pottery or a hundred other crafts we'd love you to share what you know with our guests and volunteers at Windsor Hill Wood. Not only will you be making a difference, but you'll also be able to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for crafting.

volunteer testimonials

"I have really enjoyed helping looking after the forest with Toby, he is amazing with a chainsaw and I honestly don't miss my arm that much..."
